I'm Keith Paul. My wife Debra and I are the founders of HandyPro International, LLC. We were certainly no strangers to business when we launched HandyPro in 1996. After selling our Garden City, Michigan pizzeria, Pizza Junction, Deb and I saw a new business opportunity to help protect homeowners from dishonest contractors after Deb's grandmother lost $2,000 to a kitchen remodeler who took the money but never completed the work.
We decided to establish a referral system to connect seniors and home owners with reputable contractors. We did all the background checks ourselves on electricians, plumbers, remodelers and handymen. We expanded into referrals for two-income families that needed a handyman. After helping others, we saw an obvious need for trustworthy handymen that provided quality service. So we began to hire our own handymen and provide the services ourselves.
By the year of 2000 our company, operating as HandyPro Handyman Service, began getting a lot more calls from seniors or their family members seeking help to install wheelchair ramps and stair lifts as well as grab bars, walk-in tubs and specialized plumbing and door fixtures to enable people with arthritis to turn on a faucet or open a door. Recognizing a niche market opportunity, HandyPro returned to its roots in 2008, refocusing our marketing efforts and services to the elderly and people living with disabilities.
Our success has a lot to do with what I learned while running our businesses. Here are the three most important lessons I've learned:
- Customer satisfaction is the only way for true success.
- Take care of your employees, they are the backbone of any company. Ensure your business model attracts only A+ employees. Your employees will never give better service to your customers then you give to your employees.
- Set yourself apart from the competition. You must continually set yourself apart from any other company by giving such a great experience to your customers that they say, "I'd be absolutely crazy to do business with anyone else but HandyPro!"
"With the installation of the stairlift Katie gained back some independence and we were able to function more like a family, first time since the accident. Your attention to our needs during this time was exceptional and your folks that worked in our home were skilled an respectful. We would recommend HandyPro to anyone who needs the many types of work you provide." - Dave & Linda S.
"Kenneth Cardenas did an outstanding job on my sliding glass door project. He is a pro." - Larry F
"Help!! My roof is leaking and dripping into my dining room!!!! I called several guys I know that have done some repairs for me in the past and was told I needed a new roof. They suggested I cover the roof with a blue tarp until I could get a new roof installed. Finally, I called Tom. He was there within two hours, made emergency repairs in drizzling rain, stopped the leak and came back later that week and made permanent repairs. Also told me I do not need a new roof now. Tom, I want to thank you and your company for the quick response and professional service work you provided to me. Excellent craftsmanship and wonderful clean-up. Bravo!" - Jane D.
"Thank you for the excellent job installing the new fence for us. HandyPro was not the cheapest bid we received but we trusted the way you presented the project over the other 3. The results are great and the attention to detail that you crew showed during the process, including clean up was surprising. The grass has grown in and the look of our backyard is more then we expected." - Jeanne F.
"Service was prompt and at my convenience. My contractor was able to make adjustments and avoid replacing my whole door." - Betty B.
"They thought of every way to save me money. I had one estimate that would have charged me thousands and wouldn't fix the problem long term. HandyPro took time with me and brainstormed ways to fix my deck economically. I plan to recommend them to my neighbors and use them in the future for all my handyman projects. They are a GREAT find!" - Jean D.
